Michelangelo was 26 when he carved the 17-foot 6-ton statue of David. The work began in 1501 and was completed in 1504. Michelangelo’s carving of David is a symbol of Renaissance optimism. The statue of David is hard to describe, it simply takes your breath away. We have been to many great museums over the years, this is the first time most of those visiting walked about with their mouths open, taking in all the great works of art.
I was going to post more pictures of Florence but decided that Michelangelo’s David needed a post of his own. I have posted two pictures; one as you see David in the museum, the other on a black background.
